Video gaming in English Learning

 

     Video gaming has a huge impact on language learning.  Players can also learn new vocabulary items while they are having fun. This must be considered in teaching English. If we can combine English teaching with game and fun, what would we wish more?

Video gaming can be played multiplayer. That is, they are cooperative games which players can learn English through context, play and social interactions. It promotes communicative competence. In this framework, we can say that video gaming helps to teach in a constructivist approach.

Learning language means moving language out of the class as well. Students need to practice what they have learned in the class outside. Video gaming provides this option.

In order to improve speaking, we need to create stress-free environments for students. Games lower the affective filter and encourage them to use the language spontaneously. In this sense, games are motivating learners to learn.

For more motivated students we should add gaming into our lessons.
